The Yorkshire Dales offer a raw and wild landscape, a natural realm that inspires both geological speculation and inward reflection. This spring, I embarked on a journey to explore the Three Peaks by train, a direct route from Rochdale and Manchester to the heart of the national park. The limestone terrain, with its clints and grykes, provided a challenging yet rewarding adventure, offering sweeping views of the Three Peaks and Bowland Fells. The journey began at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, where we set out to walk on a plateau between the peaks, navigating through open access land with cairns as our guide. The route took us past the dramatic edge of Long Scar, where the landscape seemed like an underwater cliff, and we paused to admire the Norber Erratics, ancient boulders transported by glaciers. The walk was a delightful blend of natural beauty and agricultural charm, with wild garlic, newborn lambs, and daffodils sprouting along the way. We eventually reached the banks of the Ribble, where we enjoyed a well-deserved pub lunch in Settle. The Three Peaks, with their different qualities and micro-seasonal weather, are a must-visit for any outdoor enthusiast. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just getting back into exercise after a wet winter, the Yorkshire Dales offer a unique and captivating experience that will leave you with lasting memories.
